Hi, I’m Joseph “Joe” Nuzzo, the photographer, instructor, and creator behind Shutter Speak and Shutter Speak Academy.
I help Nikon Z photographers understand their cameras, make better decisions in the field, and spend less time digging through menus wondering whether they changed the right setting.
My goal is simple: to explain photography and Nikon Z cameras in a way that makes sense.
No unnecessary jargon. No endless technical lectures. No pretending that one group of settings works for every photographer in every situation.
Instead, I teach you what a setting does, why it matters, and how to decide when to use it.
Modern Nikon Z cameras are incredibly capable, but they can also feel overwhelming.
There are autofocus modes, subject-detection options, custom controls, shooting banks, exposure settings, flash menus, and features buried several pages deep. Even experienced photographers can feel as though they are only using a fraction of what their camera can do.
That does not mean you bought the wrong camera.
It usually means no one has taken the time to show you how everything works together.
That is why I created Shutter Speak Academy.
The Academy is designed for photographers who want clear, practical instruction that helps them become more confident with their Nikon Z camera—whether they are picking up their first mirrorless camera or have been photographing for decades.
I have spent years working as a professional photographer across a wide range of subjects, including news, sports, concerts, events, weddings, real estate, and commercial photography.
Earlier in my career, I worked as a press photographer in New York, photographing professional hockey, live performances, breaking news, and other fast-moving situations where there was rarely an opportunity for a second chance.
That experience taught me something important:
Knowing what every camera setting does is useful. Knowing which setting matters right now is what helps you get the photograph.
Today, I bring those same lessons into my photography instruction.
I created the Shutter Speak YouTube channel to make photography education easier to understand and more useful in the real world.
The channel has grown into a community of Nikon photographers and has generated millions of views through camera tutorials, settings guides, equipment reviews, feature explanations, and practical shooting advice.
Shutter Speak Academy grew naturally from that community.
YouTube is excellent for answering a specific question. The Academy goes deeper by providing organized training that helps photographers understand how individual settings and techniques connect.
Through the Academy, I offer:
Self-paced Nikon Z masterclasses
Live Nikon Z Boot Camp training
One-on-one camera coaching
Downloadable guides and learning resources
Camera-club presentations and photography workshops
Each option is designed to meet photographers at a different point in their journey.
There are plenty of photography courses that try to cover every camera brand and every style of photography.
Shutter Speak Academy takes a different approach.
I specialize in Nikon Z cameras because detailed, model-aware instruction matters.
A Nikon Z8 does not operate exactly like a Z6III. A Zf owner may approach customization differently from a Z9 photographer. Certain features are available only on specific camera bodies, and similar menu options can behave differently depending on the model and shooting situation.
Rather than offering generic advice and telling you to “check your manual,” I explain how Nikon Z features work, where to find them, and how they may apply to your particular camera.
That focused approach allows the training to be more practical, more accurate, and more immediately useful.
I do not believe photography education should make students feel intimidated.
You should be able to ask a basic question without feeling embarrassed. You should also be able to ask an advanced question and receive more than a one-sentence answer.
My teaching is built around a few core principles:
Memorizing settings may help for one photograph. Understanding why a setting works helps in every photograph that follows.
Autofocus, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, metering, subject detection, and camera customization do not operate in isolation. I help you understand the relationships between them.
There is rarely one perfect setup for everyone. Your settings should reflect what you photograph, how you work, and what you want your images to look like.
Technical information matters, but only when it helps you make better photographs. I focus on the features and decisions that have a meaningful effect in the field.
Questions are not interruptions. They are part of learning. Live training and coaching are designed to give you the opportunity to ask why something is happening and receive an answer that applies to your situation.
Shutter Speak Academy is for Nikon Z photographers who:
Feel overwhelmed by menus and customization options
Want to understand autofocus instead of guessing
Struggle with inconsistent exposure or soft photographs
Want to learn flash photography without making it unnecessarily complicated
Have upgraded to a Nikon Z camera and are not sure where to begin
Have years of experience but want to take better advantage of modern mirrorless features
Prefer straightforward explanations and real-world examples
Want their camera to work with them instead of against them
You do not need to be a professional photographer.
You simply need to be interested in understanding your camera and improving your photography.
Not every photographer learns the same way, so Shutter Speak Academy offers several training formats.
The self-paced masterclasses allow you to focus on specific subjects such as autofocus, exposure, and flash photography. You can watch the lessons on your own schedule and return to them whenever you need a refresher.
Nikon Z Boot Camp is an eight-week live online program that provides a structured walkthrough of the camera, its settings, important photographic concepts, and practical applications. Students can ask questions during class, participate in assignments, and watch session recordings when needed.
One-on-one coaching provides personalized help with your camera, settings, shooting techniques, or a specific challenge you are trying to solve.
Whichever path you choose, the purpose is the same: to give you more confidence and control when you pick up your camera.
Photography is not ultimately about menus, buttons, or specification sheets.
It is about what those tools allow you to create.
A camera setting matters because it helps you capture a meaningful expression, freeze an important moment, separate a subject from the background, preserve the atmosphere of a scene, or create an image you are proud to share.
The technology should support the photograph—not become an obstacle to it.
That is what I want every Shutter Speak Academy student to experience.
